Garden timber takes the worst punishment of any exterior surface, UV, rain, freeze-thaw, ground contact and biological growth. Cheap creosote substitutes last a single season. Done properly, the same fence can look smart for five years before needing a refresh.

The unglamorous truth is that fence and garden timber finishing fails because of the product, not the labour. A solvent-based fence dip looks good for a season and then bleaches; a proper UV-rated stain or paint with a breathable formulation lasts four to five times longer for around the same total cost per year.
