Overview

What good wallpapering actually looks like

Wallpaper is unforgiving. Every mistake, a misaligned drop, a bubble at a seam, a ceiling line that drifts, is visible from across the room, every day, for years.

We hang and remove wallpaper across Bracknell, Ascot, Reading, Wokingham, Windsor and the wider Berkshire area. Work ranges from a single feature wall in a bedroom, through to full open-plan living areas and stairwells using murals and large-pattern hand-printed papers.

We're regularly called in to install papers from Cole & Son, Farrow & Ball, Sanderson, Morris & Co, Designers Guild, Little Greene and high-end mural houses. Each brand has its own paste regime and drying behaviour: getting it wrong shows.

Removal jobs typically involve woodchip, anaglypta, multi-layered lining paper, or a previous owner's vinyl that's been overpainted half a dozen times. Done badly, removal destroys the plaster underneath; done correctly, the wall comes back ready to paint or repaper without skimming.

Don't ignore this

Where wallpaper jobs go wrong

Bad wallpapering is unforgiving. Once it's up, you live with every mistake.

Pattern drift

Drops hung without continuous pattern matching look acceptable on the first wall, and noticeably off-axis by the third corner. Every visit to the room becomes a hunt for the offending seam.

Bubbles, blisters and lifting seams

Too much paste, too little paste, or under-soaked paper traps moisture and air. Within weeks seams curl and bubbles form, and you can't roll them out without leaving a permanent mark.

Walls destroyed during removal

Stripping woodchip or vinyl with a steamer in untrained hands gouges the plaster beneath. What should have been a wallpaper job becomes a re-skim.

Wrong paste for the paper

Heavy vinyl needs different adhesive to a delicate hand-printed cotton-rag paper. Using the wrong one stains the face from behind: invisible until it dries.

Our Process

A clear sequence,no guesswork, no chaos.

  1. 01

    Survey & paper review

Wall measurement, calculation of drops including pattern repeat allowance, and review of the chosen paper's hanging instructions to confirm paste type, drying time and any special handling.

  2. 02

    Wall preparation

Old paper removed cleanly, walls washed of size and old paste, repairs made, and a sizing or lining paper applied where the substrate is uneven or porous.

  3. 03

    Setting out & first drop

Walls plumbed with a laser line, first drop hung to a true vertical, pattern centred on the room's focal point, typically a chimney breast or feature wall.

  4. 04

    Hanging & matching

Successive drops butt-jointed with continuous pattern match, seams rolled gently, excess paste cleaned off the face immediately, internal and external corners cut and lapped correctly.

  5. 05

    Finishing & walk-through

Trim cuts at ceiling, skirting and around sockets finished cleanly with a sharp blade, walk-through with you in raking light, off-cuts kept for future repairs.

Benefits

What you actually get,not vague promises.

Pattern matched the way the designer intended

Large repeats, drop-matches and reverse hangs handled correctly, the paper looks the way it does in the catalogue, not a budget version of it.

Bubble-free, lifting-free seams

Correct soak times, correct paste weight, correctly rolled, seams stay flat and invisible for the life of the paper.

Walls protected during removal

Steam, scoring tools and care used to lift old paper without damaging the plaster beneath. Where damage is unavoidable, we'll tell you in advance.

Honest paper estimates

We calculate paper rolls including pattern repeat and waste. No mid-job 'we need three more rolls' surprises.

Tidy, dust-controlled work

Strippers and steamers contained, drop sheets down, off-cuts bagged at the end of each day.

Compatible with full decoration

Wallpapering is co-ordinated with woodwork repaints, ceiling refresh and feature lighting so the room is finished as one job, not three.

In Depth

The detail behindthe finished result.

Paper types we hang

Paste-the-wall papers (Graham & Brown, Erismann) hang quickly and forgive substrate variation. Paste-the-paper traditional papers (Farrow & Ball, Cole & Son, Sanderson) need precise soak times and a sympathetic hand. Vinyl and grass-cloth need vinyl-grade adhesive and gentle seam rolling.

Hand-printed and digitally printed mural panels are matched at the join to the supplier's panel guide; we order with the manufacturer's recommended overage and store flat until hanging day.

Removal and preparation

Standard non-woven and vinyl papers normally strip with a scoring tool, hot water and patience. Woodchip and heavily painted anaglypta need a wallpaper steamer and a slow, careful pass to avoid plaster damage. Lining paper underneath is normally left in place if sound, or stripped and the wall lined fresh.

Where walls come back rough or with patches of damaged plaster, we either make-good with filler and a fresh lining paper, or recommend skimming where the damage warrants it.

Lining paper as a base

On uneven or previously stripped walls, lining paper (typically 1200- or 1400-grade) is hung horizontally as a base for a final paper or paint. It hides minor wall variation, evens out porosity, and is the single most common reason a final finish looks better in our work than in a quick repaint.

Common Questions

Everything you needbefore we start.

How much wallpaper will I need?

It depends on the room size and the pattern repeat. We measure walls and calculate drops including repeat allowance and 10% waste, and give you an exact roll count before you order. No mid-job shortages.

Can you hang any wallpaper?

Yes, paste-the-paper, paste-the-wall, non-woven, vinyl, grass-cloth, foiled, hand-printed and large-scale mural panels are all part of regular work.

How long does it take to wallpaper a room?

A standard double bedroom feature wall takes a day. A full bedroom in a plain or simple repeat paper is one to two days. Full living rooms or stairwells in a large-repeat or mural paper run two to four days including prep.

Will you remove our old wallpaper?

Yes: stripping existing paper, washing off old paste and sizing the wall is included whenever we re-paper. We can also do removal as a stand-alone job to leave you a wall ready for paint.

Will the wall be damaged when paper is removed?

Usually no, we strip slowly with a steamer and scoring tool to protect the plaster. If we discover damage underneath (often from previous botched DIY jobs) we'll flag it before we continue and quote the make-good separately.

Do you do feature walls only?

Yes, a single feature wall is one of our most popular jobs and is typically completed in a day.

Can we live in the house during the job?

Yes, paste and paper give off minimal smell and rooms are usable the same evening.

Do you supply the wallpaper?

We can, usually at trade discount, or you supply it directly. Either way is fine; we'll match the rolls to your batch numbers before opening.

What about wallpapering around tricky details?

Sockets, switches, radiators, arches, sloped ceilings and stairwells are all part of normal work. They take longer but we don't dodge them.
